Seafood #1 - Sushi

Seafood is a delicacy that my husband and I revel in.  Just recently, probably within the last year, we’ve discovered that more than any other kind, we love to choose seafood restaurants when we eat out for a nice meal.  I’ve loved seafood ever since shrimp beat out corn as my favorite food when I was around 8 years old.  And my husband has far outdone me in the adventurous seafood eater department lately.  On our trip to Mexico last year, Jake ate some of the nastiest looking seafood I’ve ever seen:  whole baby octopi in a seafood soup!  Not to mention his love of the big raw mackerel pieces of sushi.  I’m more of a cooked seafood kind of chick.

Here’s the first of our favorite seafood restaurant experiences so far (look for two more installments of this theme!):

We absolutely love Hiro, our sushi joint.  We should own stock in it.  You can get half price sushi on Friday and Saturday nights from 10:00pm til midnight.  You can even call ahead, pick it up to go and eat it in the comfort of your own home!   They also have a happy hour Monday through Thursday from 4:00 – 6:00pm where they have 4 kinds of rolls for half price.  Love, love, love it!   And for those that haven’t tried sushi, I’m a big proponent of at least trying it once.  I was very hesitant to do so myself, and my husband can be a pretty picky eater (no cheese!) but we both adore it.  Thanks to our friends Dave & Stef for introducing us to this lifetime love!!

  2. What is your favorite sushi roll at Hiro? Sushi is one of those things that once I have it (which is only about twice a month) I OBSESS about when I will have it again. Unfortunately my hubbie is not a fan....however I'm excited to know about Hiro's weekly happy hour-is that take out too? I usually go to Kona Grill with my gf's cuz they have a really cheap happy hour. I did try Baby Blue last Thursday for the first time and thought it was super (so was my grapefruit martini). From what I hear Kona's sushi doesn't even compare to Blue and Hiro.

  3. Hillary--you are right! The sushi at Kona doesn't even compare to the sushi at Blue or Hiro, they are the most delicious places to enjoy it! :):) But I do love the atmosphere at Kona a lot and they do make some wonderful drinks!
This blog makes me want a serious small group girls night out at Hiro!

  4. I've only had one roll at Kona & it was okay, but Hiro was better. And I've tried other places but Hiro always comes out on top. I haven't tried Blue or Baby Blue, but I'd love to!! The happy hour is takeout as well. We should have a girls night!

  6. Sorry, Hillary, I forgot to answer the question about my favorite roll! I love the classic Cali roll, as well as their Husker roll - thin slice of seared beef wrapped around a piece of tempura'd asparagus, with cream cheese & eel sauce drizzled on top. Yum! Oh, the West Coast roll is great too!!

  7. I feel the need to state that I love the Hiro Crunch at Hiro-- a deep fried California roll. It's calorie free, too :) I would love to try Blue or Baby Blue and Sushi Japan is on restaurant.com where they have gift cards for 80% off. Girls Night! Girls Night!

  8. Sushi Japan was not my favorite when I tried it. But I'm all about trying to schedule a girls night & we can do Hiro or any of the Blues!
