Friday Night Pizza Tradition

Awhile ago I posted about my favorite pizza places.  And I mentioned that some friends of ours from Cincinnati had a Sunday night Donato’s pepperoni pizza & movie tradition.  Something my husband envied and lobbied to copy but just never happened for us.  A couple weeks ago I was in the mood for pizza (something Jake never protests against) and it happened to be a Friday night.  I got to thinking that maybe we should start a Friday night pizza tradition.  But since we’ve endeavored to be better with our finances, ordering out every Friday night wouldn’t be permissible.  That didn’t stop me, though.  I decided that every Friday night that we’re home without other plans, we’ll have pizza of some variety, be that homemade, frozen or takeout.  (Not delivery, as that incurs a significant extra fee that would be silly to pay unless it’s blizzarding out.)  So far we’ve made it about a month and I’ve remembered to keep up the tradition.  I’m still excited about trying Orsi’s sometime in the near future.  I’ve even seen some commercials for them lately!  Anyway, if it’s Friday night and we’re at home, you know what’s going to be on our table.  Unless I forget.  :-)  Tonight is just such a night.  And it’s going to be homemade.  My recipe for homemade includes a Walmart brand pizza crust mix, Walmart brand pizza sauce, turkey pepperoni, Canadian bacon, mushrooms, Italian seasoning & shredded mozzarella.  I love ground beef on a homemade pizza, but it’s more work & more expense.  And Jake doesn’t love, love it so it’s just not worth it for us, I guess.  Feel free to let me know your recipe for homemade pizza!

  1. Donatos was always a Friday night tradition for us when we lived in Cincinnati! My extended family would get the party room every Friday night and we'd fill it up and order tons and tons of pizza. So sad there are no Donatos in Florida! Now we make our own...we use the Chef Boyardee cheese pizza kit, which comes complete with crust mix and pizza sauce, and then we add lots of mozzarella and turkey pepperoni.

  2. Cari -- I bought a day old slice of pizza at HyVee for a dollar yesterday! Upon further thought when I got home, I considered that I was pretty much eating something I had gotten out of a dollar bin.....and thoroughly loving it :)

  3. Have you grilled homemade pizza before? I made a great BBQ pizza this summer with leftover BBQ pork and a homemade crust that was designed to be grilled. I'll have to go find my recipe and share. I doubled it and froze half of it with no problems so then it was easy to pull out and use later.

  4. I use a homemade crust recipe from http://recipes.robbiehaf.com/T/272.htm I really like it and although it says thin crust, only once have I got it very thin. :) Contadina pizza sauce, pepperoni and mozzarella. Love it! I'm trying a weekly pizza night, too. We love pizza, it's easy, and cheap!

  5. Jen, I feel for you with no Donato's - same here! I did see your post about your grilled pizza this summer, Kayla. At least I think you blogged about that, right? And it sounded yummy but our grill got knocked over & busted during a windstorm this summer so we need to replace it. Some day! Love all the comments!!!! Not sure I'd be willing to risk the day-old pizza, Beth, but I'm glad your thriftiness paid off for you. :-) And Megan, my mom had a good homemade pizza crust recipe, but I'm super duper lazy & it's bread, so if I'm going to go all out to make something, it's probably not going to be bread-based. :-)

  6. We have homemade pizza on Friday nights at our house! Except last night, when my mom ordered takeout pizza from Chicago's pizza as a treat!

I use the walmart pizza crust and pizza sauce, too. I use pepperoni and Jimmy Dean's ready-to-eat breakfast sausage, onions and peppers. Or I make BBQ chicken pizza - chicken, sweet baby ray's bbq sauce, onions, peppers and cheddar cheese!

I also have a cheeseburger pizza recipe. Mix the pizza sauce with kethcup and mustard. Use ground beef, onions and diced dill pickle. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese and add some american cheese slices for good measure!
